How much space should you leave on an ebike? Safety explained

Keeping safe space when riding an ebike

When riding an ebike, space is safety.

Buffering means keeping a clear zone around you so you have time to react if something changes suddenly.

Ebikes are heavier and often faster than regular bikes. That means they take longer to slow down and need more room to manoeuvre. Riding too close to cars, kerbs, parked vehicles, or pedestrians removes your margin for error.

A good buffer gives you:

  • Time to brake smoothly
  • Room to avoid sudden obstacles
  • Space to be seen by drivers and pedestrians

Practical guidance:

  • Keep at least one metre from parked cars where possible
  • Avoid riding in the gutter or hugging the kerb
  • Leave extra space at higher speeds

Buffering is about staying relaxed, predictable, and in control.
