Helmets reduce the risk of serious and permanent brain injury and can save lives.

Should you wear a helmet?

It seems like an obvious answer, but plenty of people prefer not to.

Helmet laws and riding safety

Helmet laws vary by country and region

Helmet requirements vary between countries, regions, and cities.

In China, for example, shared bike platforms such as Meituan and Hello Bike do not provide helmets when you hire one of their bicycles. Many local riders do not wear one.

What happens when helmets are not required

In those situations, I followed local riding behaviour.

Instead, I relied on my broader road safety knowledge: maintaining spatial awareness, keeping a safe buffer from vehicles and pedestrians, setting up my riding position properly, keeping my hands lightly on the brake levers, using hand signals, staying alert, and keeping my head up and eyes forward to anticipate hazards. This also depends on how much space you leave on an ebike.

What riders should know about insurance and hire conditions

Note: even where helmets are not legally required, operators and insurers may still expect riders to wear one as a condition of hire or cover.

Bottom line

Helmets are a proven safety essential, but cycling safely also means staying aware, confident, and in control. If helmets are required where you ride, wear one. If not, ride smart, stay visible, and follow local customs and road rules.

And remember, riding an ebike is about exploring places up close, as part of the landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I legally need to wear a helmet when riding an ebike
That depends on the country, region, and sometimes the city. Always check local laws before riding.

If helmets are not required, should I still wear one
Yes, if you can. Even where helmets are not mandatory, they reduce the risk of serious head injury and may be required by hire operators or insurers.
